As a chess enthusiast, you know there are many situations that would be improved by a good chess book – but only a Grandmaster could read one without a chess set. Until now. This app gives you book and set, so you can read great chess literature anywhere, any time, without skipping over the long lines and subvariations.

Chess books, by their very nature, are more than just text. With this app, chess books can be everything they were meant to be.

FEATURES
● Read real, full-length chess books, without setting up one board for the main line and another for the variations (as recommended by various authors).
● Highlight important information.
● Add notes into pages.
● Solve puzzles – move the pieces around to see if your solution looks good. Tap the Solution button to see the answer. No need to rummage through the back of the book to check the solutions, and no danger of accidentally seeing the solution to the next puzzle while you’re checking the previous one.
● Ponder continuations – think about the position before tapping the Reveal button to see how the game proceeded (and whether the players chose the correct continuations).
● Study endings – play out the long solutions of endgame puzzles effortlessly, and get a proper feel for the technique involved.
● Tap on moves directly, or use the buttons under the live board to follow the main line, or to follow through moves as they appear in the text (main lines and variations).
● Tap on any diagram in the text to set it up on the live board.
● Change the text size, and the size of the diagrams in the text.
● Easy navigation through the book, by Contents, or Player, or Opening.
● Lookup words in a dictionary.
● The book remembers where you stopped reading and opens at that page for you.
● Read chess books on the train, on the bus, in the air, or while waiting interminably between any two modes of transport.
● Continue reading without worrying that the table will be cleared of your chess set for dinner, or that the cat will decide to sleep on the center squares, or that the kids will make off with it to use as an alien zoo.
● Have you really played through as many of the famous old classics as you would like? Take a chess classic to the armchair; relax and enjoy the fantastic variations, and the comments of the all-time greats.
● Build up a library of new books, great classics, and everything in-between.
● Enjoy chess books in any spare moment. Coffee and Capablanca? Muffin and Morphy? No problem. Tall skinny latte and Lasker, any time.
● Take your whole chess library on holiday – Botvinnik by the beach.
● Read chess books in the gym.
● Where else? Join us on our e+Blog and tell us where you read our chess books!

Best (we think) on the iPad, but works great on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Pros and cons of ePlusChess Books app for iPhone and iPad

ePlusChess Books app good for

This is my favourite ebook application for studying chess with "ChessDB" . Left page you have the text, right the animated chess diagrams illustrating the purpose (you can go backward forward into variations). So for those you never read any chess book because of having to know 64 squares by heart this is going to make it easy to improve. This application comes with "Chess Fundamentals" from Rahul Capablanca for free , which is already a good reason to get it , as you can buy the real book for 20€ in any chess books shop... I bought Silmams "Comprehensive Chess Endings" on my iPad , and really enjoy it, I had the real book actually, but it was too much work to visualise the examples before this application came out... I really think that this way of reading is the future of chess literature . I just hope more books are going to get released on this, as for now the choice is a little poor... PS. I have a suggestion, why not putting the chess variations into a different colour than the main line (in red for example, for lines and pièces). Also, for those who have an iPad and an iPhone, its possible to get a book you have bought on your two machines without any extra paying with the option share your downloads I have a complain to do about your progression in a book, that is lost very often, you have to find again which page in the book you were! Is it done on purpose ? Possible as you find yourself on the Bookstore (you only need a click to buy a book , at 14€!, so be carefull) every time. No global view of your position in the book is given .
Awesome app. All it really needs is a larger selection of books (which will come in time Im sure), and the ability to rotate the board (which will also likely come). Just check that the library of offered books has something that interests you. If it does, this app gets a strong recommend!
I recently bought Improve Your Chess Tactics via this App and Im pretty happy with this purchase. In old days I had to work with a book and a chessboard (because i believe just visualising a combination is not enough, you need to see pieces moving to bolster your tactical memory). With the help of this App I dont need a chessbook, a piece of paper to record the solutions and a chessboard to check how well Ive done. Id like more tactical exercise workbooks, because I think its one of the most useful ways to use this App. And also integration with a chess engine will be an excellent addition.
It is completely practical in its approach to Chess study. Well done!
Please add feature to bookmark pages. Sometimes if you close out completely it sends you to the beginning of a chapter. Ive been inserting notes in the text to serve as a bookmark
Ive been waiting for this app long before I knew for sure it existed yet. Makes chess books fun to read, and much easier to follow, I wish to never have to read a chess book without it. Thanks for the app.

Some bad moments

I first heard about this app afew weeks ago and watched for it everyday! Its here and its everything I hoped it would be. This really streamlines the learning process and is the next best thing to live lessons. In the near future many books will be available and I believe its possible to advance very quickly in your chess with this one app alone! Its very easy to use and once you try it you wont want to study any other way! I give it 5 stars as no other instruction app comes close.
An incredible app! Great job, thank you so much for this product!!!! Im now looking forward to my commute in and out of NYC on the bus everyday as I feel like the time will be VERY well spent studying and learning more about the game I love!!!! Id love to know what books are coming? Ive already purchased 4 of the available books and wonder what might be available next. . . . Thanks again for what Im sure will be become one of my very favorite apps!!!! -Ted
Just watch the video on Showyou, rush to app store downloaded it cant believe what I have with me for free? Is awesome!! The chess fundamentals is beautiful! Hope to see more books!!
Well, I had heard that this was coming but that was a few months ago... I must say, it was well worth the wait! Simply elegant and seamless!
THIS is what the iPad is for: An interactive chess book. Comes with one free book and the option to buy others. Must have taken a lot of work to turn these books into interactive books. Hope they can get the rights to do some of the more popular books. My only gripe (and its the same gripe with a lot of apps) is that I wish it had a thorough user manual built into the app. Its fairly intuitive, but still...
Brilliant app! Book on the left, board on the right. Tap any move in the text, and the board sets automatically to that position. Move pieces to analyze on the right, tap the left to reset and keep reading. Fits the iPad perfectly. No more pieces rolling on the floor, or needing two boards to follow the text. Very nicely done.
